Filling sub-shells

Electrons occupy sub-shells in order of increasing energy. 4s sits just below 3d, so it fills first.

One concept at a time. Now use it in a question.

Which of these sub-shells fills first?

A
3d
B
4s
C
4p

Answer: B, 4s

4s is lower in energy than 3d and 4p, so it fills first. When a transition metal forms an ion, those 4s electrons are also the first to be lost.

Lower and Upper Sixth in one course

You can watch Chemistry all day. Then the paper arrives.

The challenge isn’t always finding a lesson. It’s knowing what to learn next, whether you really understood it, and how to use that concept when a question looks unfamiliar.

“Where do I even start?”

“I understood it in the video. Why can’t I answer?”

“Which topics do I still need to revise?”

“Where do past papers fit in?”

“What if I get the same thing wrong again?”

One sequence. The next clear step.

The course

The syllabus is a route. Not a search bar.

Move from the building blocks of Chemistry to application and practical questions, with practice connected to the topic you’ve just learned.

Watching isn’t learning. Answering is.

Every explanation leads somewhere. From the first idea through practice and correction, Alt links the steps so you can find out what has clicked, and what still needs work.

1. Learn

Focused lessons

One concept at a time, explained clearly enough to pause, replay and understand.

2. Check

Skill Checks

Answer a question straight after learning, so understanding isn’t left to guesswork.

3. Strengthen

Notes and recall

Bring back the definitions, formulas and reactions you need to remember.

4. Apply

Topical practice

Use the idea in an exam-style question while the chapter is still fresh.

5. Test

Chapter tests

Find the gaps before they turn up in the exam.

6. Prepare

Worked papers

See how concepts connect across a full paper and why the working matters.

For Zimbabwe, specifically

Same clarity. Your syllabus.

ZIMSEC is its own examination route, so this is its own course. It’s for Zimbabwean A Level Chemistry students, separate from Alt’s Cambridge course.

From Alt Chemistry students

Good teaching has a way of travelling.

These comments come from Alt’s Cambridge Chemistry students. ZIMSEC is a new course, so they are not ZIMSEC results.

I was absolutely helpless three weeks before Chem Paper 4, and literally everything changed when I was recommended that playlist.

Honestly the best Chemistry teacher I have ever had, and one of the best teachers I have seen.
